It was an outrageous idea, so outrageous that it met huge resistance from inside General Motors as soon as it was raised: a short production run of 1969 Camaros equipped with the all-aluminum 427 ZL1 engine. Built for use in the Can-Am series, the engine was never intended by Chevrolet brass for duty on the street, but Chevy product guru Vince Piggins would not take no for an answer. Working through Chevrolet’s COPO program, Piggins ordered enough ZL1-equipped Camaros to satisfy his dealer network, and the rest is Camaro history.
Of the 69 COPO ZL1 Camaros built in 1969, this car, number 55, is in all probability the most unique and desirable of all, an unrestored original with only 7,700 miles on the odometer. Formerly a centerpiece of the Otis Chandler collection, it is one of only two Rally Sport ZL1s and the most thoroughly-optioned. The Le Mans Blue Metallic paint is accented with the original dealer-applied white hood-bulge scallops and pinstriping, and topped with a rare white vinyl roof. The Z22 Rally Sport package adds a blacked-out grill with hideaway headlights, bright wheel arch trim moldings and drip rails, bright accented taillights, RS badging and name plates and other distinguishing details.
The white-accent color theme continues inside with the black dash and carpets offset by exceedingly handsome white seats and door panels. The Z23 Special Interior package includes an assist grip, Rosewood steering wheel, driver’s remote mirror, tinted glass, woodgrain accents, rear seat speaker, and bright pedal trim. The U17 Special Instrument package and D55 Console complete the most well-equipped interior in the entire ZL1 fleet.
As with all ZL1s, this car’s engine is a story all on its own, but in this case it is of particular interest to collectors, for whereas most surviving ZL1 Camaros have a replacement engine, this car has two legitimate original engines! The car was delivered new to its first owner in 1969 with a replacement warranty engine due to problems discovered in the original block prior to delivery. The actual original engine has been located and recently rebuilt, and will be included in the lot at auction, further adding to this incredible car’s exclusivity.
