Hindered by GM’s corporate dictum limiting engines to 400 cubic inches in all but its full-sized cars, dealers like Fred Gibb worked with Chevrolet product genius Vince Piggins for 1969 to bring their “special” customers what they really wanted: a sleeper Camaro stuffed with an all-aluminum 427-cubic-inch Can-Am racing engine.
The plain-wrapper Daytona Yellow Camaro offered here is a Fred Gibb Chevrolet car, number fifty-seven in the 1969 issue of 69 cars, and it truly is the ultimate sleeper. Aside from unobtrusive front and rear spoilers, there are no markings or badges to indicate the car’s true nature; while that might have caught people off guard in 1969, we now know it’s almost always a sure sign of trouble. Along with the 500-plus horsepower ZL1 shoehorned beneath the Cowl Induction hood, the car was fitted with a four-core radiator, F41 suspension, M22 “Rock Crusher” wide-ratio Muncie 4-speed and a 12-bolt 4.10:1 Positraction rear end, Chevy’s strongest unit.
The Black interior is all business and completely as original, without even a column-mounted tach or a console between the basic vinyl bucket seats. The only concession to driver comfort is the optional vacuum-assist power brake system; front discs were part of the COPO package that added $4,160.00 to the car’s base price tag. This immaculate COPO Camaro is just as Vince Piggins conceived it, and as business-like as Fred Gibb ordered it.
Fully restored by a leading expert, this prized ZL1 is documented with a copy of the original invoice and Protect-O-Plate.
